Air Independent Propulsion ou Propulsão Independente do Ar, é uma sigla que quem se debruça sobre o tema «Submarinos» está a encontrar cada vez com mais frequência.&lt;br /&gt;Dá-se esta designação aos submarinos que dispõem de capacidade para submergir e ficar encobertos pelas águas durante muito mais tempo que os submarinos convencionais que são propulsionados apenas por um motor a Diesel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Na realidade, o AIP é um problema para as marinhas poderosas, de países que contam com o poder das suas esquadras de superfície para controlar o mar. Com submarinos difíceis de encontrar, um país que disponha de alguns destes equipamentos pode provocar problemas mesmo à mais poderosa das esquadras.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Receando o problema, e reconhecendo o excesso de confiança de muitos comandantes da marinha dos Estados Unidos, os norte americanos estabeleceram um contrato com a marinha da Suécia, para que esta disponibilizasse um dos seus submarinos da classe Gotland, equipado com AIP, para que a US Navy testasse tácticas e processos de defesa contra esse tipo de ameaça.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O governo da Suécia, um país que mesmo durante a guerra fria manteve-se neutral, acedeu em emprestar o navio e a tripulação, para que estes efectuassem ataques simulados a navios americanos da frota do Oceano Pacífico.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Os resultados dos testes não são naturalmente divulgados, nem as eventuais tácticas que os norte-americanos poderão desenvolver a partir do estudo dos «ataques» do submarino Sueco são ou serão conhecidas.&lt;br /&gt;No entanto, sabe-se que a marinha dos Estados Unidos da América tinha inicialmente previsto que o submarino Sueco concluísse 120 dias de mar, em operações com a frota. Mas algo aconteceu, para justificar que o numero de dias previsto para os testes tenha atingido mais do dobro desse numero: 250dias.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Há várias explicações para o facto de o numero de dias ter aumentado, e entre essas explicações, está a de que de facto a marinha americana, pura e simplesmente não sabia como encontrar o pequeno submarino.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Preparada e treinada durante a guerra fria para dar caça aos gigantescos submarinos da União Soviética, a tripulação dos navios americanos parece ter sempre olhado com algum menosprezo para os pequenos submarinos com propulsão Diesel-electrica normalmente de origem europeia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Durante os anos 80 até um pequeno submarino português do tipo Daphné logrou em testes disparar os seus torpedos contra um navio porta-aviões norte-americano antes de ser descoberto.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As autoridades militares norte-americanas têm normalmente desenvolvido programas de testes com submarinos de países «vizinhos» em termos marítimos, como o Peru e a Colômbia, e estão em negociações com o Chile para entrar no mesmo programa, mas nenhum destes países dispõe de submarinos com sistema AIP, pelo que não é possível em nenhum daqueles casos efectuar testes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mas há mais razões para dores de cabeça.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Na verdade, o sistema AIP utilizado pelos submarinos suecos, (conhecido como Stirling) embora não seja exactamente antigo, é considerado muito menos eficiente que sistemas mais recentes, porque implica a existência de um motor que queima óleo Diesel juntamente com oxigénio. Ocorre que presentemente existem outros sistemas considerados mais sofisticados e silenciosos, como o de células de combustível da alemã Siemens/Permasyn.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Trata-se de um sistema que não tem sequer peças móveis, e que produz electricidade através de uma reacção química do Oxigénio com o Hidrogénio. A reacção química dá-se a temperaturas relativamente baixas, pelo que a possibilidade de o submarino deixar algum rasto, seja acústico seja térmico, é ainda menor que no caso dos submarinos suecos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O problema da US Navy, não são naturalmente os submarinos que os países seus aliados estão a desenvolver, mas sim a possibilidade de este tipo de tecnologia cair em mãos de países que a podem utilizar de forma efectiva contra os Estados Unidos da América.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sabe-se que na Rússia se têm vindo a estudar sistemas de propulsão independente do ar desde há muitos anos. Sabe-se que os russos tentaram utilizando o perigoso Peróxido de Hidrogénio[1] como propelente de submarinos, mas os testes não parecem ter levado a nenhuma conclusão satisfatória, por razões ligadas à autonomia dos navios.&lt;br /&gt;Sistemas idênticos aos de células de combustível estão presentemente a ser estudados pela Rússia para instalação na sua nova classe de submarinos de propulsão convencional&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;hr /&gt;O Peróxido de Hidrogénio é utilizado por vários países desde a II Guerra Mundial como propelente de torpedos. Os 2/&lt;em&gt;VLS&lt;/em&gt; têm 32 células cada um e estão colocados um à vante e o outro à ré entre os 2 hangares.&lt;br /&gt;O projecto da Gibs &amp;amp; Cox tem como concorrente directo um projecto espanhol da NAVANTIA, derivado da &lt;em&gt;F-105&lt;/em&gt;, com algumas alterações para ir ao encontro das especificações australianas, nomeadamente o aumento da autonomia através de um aumento da capacidade de combustível de 100 t. O projecto espanhol é mais barato e neste momento (19-03-07), encontra-se na Australia um navio da classe &lt;em&gt;Alvaro de Bazan&lt;/em&gt;, numa missão de propaganda. Um dos trunfos é precisamente o preço, pois o valor de 3 &lt;em&gt;DDG&lt;/em&gt; derivados dos &lt;em&gt;DDG 51&lt;/em&gt; custam sensivelmente o mesmo que 4 &lt;em&gt;DDG F-100&lt;/em&gt;. Os &lt;em&gt;Atago&lt;/em&gt; distinguem-se dos &lt;em&gt;Kongo&lt;/em&gt; por serem mais compridos (165 m contra os 161 dos &lt;em&gt;Kongo&lt;/em&gt;) e possuírem 2 hangares para helicópteros enquanto que os &lt;em&gt;Kongo&lt;/em&gt; só possuem uma plataforma para 1 helicóptero, sem hangar. Equipados com o sistema &lt;em&gt;Aegis&lt;/em&gt; que permite o tratamento de 12 objectivos simultâneamente a 100 km. É constituído por 4 consolas &lt;em&gt;Mk 2&lt;/em&gt;, 1 sistema &lt;em&gt;Command and decision Mk 2&lt;/em&gt;, 1 sistema de controlo das armas &lt;em&gt;Mk 8&lt;/em&gt;, 1 sistema &lt;em&gt;Quick Response Maintenance Mk 7&lt;/em&gt; e 2 lançadores verticais &lt;em&gt;VLS Mk 41&lt;/em&gt; (61 células à ré entre os 2 hangares, 29 à vante, equipadas com 74/&lt;em&gt;SM-2 MR&lt;/em&gt; e 16/&lt;em&gt;VL Asroc&lt;/em&gt; + 6 módulos de recarregamento). Infelizmente, a inexistência de projectos concretos da Marinha da Federação da Rússia faz com que nenhum navio seja analisado, até porque os em serviço, os cruzadores de batalha da classe Kirov e os destroyers do tipo 956 e 956A da classe Sovremennyy já são projectos antigos. Serão os primeiros navios a integrarem o sistema RAM no Aegis. Às 80 células do VLS Mk 41 juntam-se 48 células de um VLS de origem coreana, num total de 128 células, distribuidas pela vante, entre a 127 e a superstrutura e à ré entre os dois hangares para os helicópteros. Navios que pelo seu deslocamento e armamento deveriam serem classificados como cruzadores. A committee of the Portuguese government arrived at the Netherlands to evaluate the condition of two frigates to be bought. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;In the end of May 2006, the Portuguese Government Official News Bulletin published the order for the creation of an Official Portuguese Navy's "technical team" to supervise the transfer of two M-Class Frigates to Portugal. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;On November 1st 2006, the Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Severiano Teixeira signed a contract for the purchase of the frigates Van Nes and Van Galen. Van Nes will be transfered to Portugal on December 1, 2008 and Van Galen on November 1, 2009&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;This represents the culmination of a long process with the objective of replacing the remaining 2 FF frigates of the João Belo class from the 1960s, that started back in 2003, when the government at that date negociated with the USA the “granting” of 2 Oliver Hazard Perry frigates. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;The original plan would be for Portugal to have 2 AAW escorts for the so-long-waited LPD , hence the original idea of the Perrys(although at the time the Navy was considering the Dutch AAW Jacob Van Hermeskerk twins, sold meanwhile to Chile)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;Lack of funds at that time did not allow for the purchase of the L-type (Dutch AAW Jacob Van Hermeskerk).
